Location

Carbonear is situated on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province, and the Avalon Peninsula is the most easterly part of Newfoundland and Labrador. When you come to the Avalon Peninsula, you are visiting the closest point in North America to Europe, and one of the places in North America first settled by Europeans over four hundred years ago.
Tourists from outside must travel to the province either through St. John's Airport or through Marine Atlantic passenger and car ferries, two of which are among the largest in Canada. Marine Atlantic arrives at both the West coast of the province (Port aux Basques) and the East coast (Argentia.) Argentia, which is on the other side of the Avalon Peninsula, is much closer to Carbonear.

Carbonear is conveniently located in the northwest quadrant of the Avalon Peninsula. It is about 120 km from St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, and about 110 km from Argentia, the eastern terminal for Marine Atlantic. Both St. John's and Argentia can be reached via Veteran's Memorial Highway (Route 75) which is an interchange running directly from the Trans Canada Highway (Route 1) to the town of Carbonear. St. John's Airport is only about one hour away.
Weather
The weather in Carbonear is very similar to St. John's since it is so close. Newfoundlander weather is temperate - in the summer, it is seldom too hot; and in winter, temperatures on the Avalon peninsula are temperate when compared to other parts of the province and of other parts of Canada. In recent years, many tourists have been happy to escape the oppressive heat of many parts of North America and Europe and enjoy our the tranquil beauty of our mild summers.
Here is a quote from Yahoo! about the climate in Newfound:
"Newfoundland's climate varies quite a bit, from the moderate temperatures enjoyed by the island to the extremes found in Labrador. ...average temperatures in St. John's during January run 18 to 30 F/-8 to -1 C, with snow that sometimes turns to rain. Even so, only the. hardiest travelers will want to go in the winter, especially by ferry. Summer is the best time to visit, though an autumn-color tour in early fall can also be enjoyable. In summer, the coasts will be cooler and foggier than inland. Expect coastal temperatures to peak around 70 F/21 C most July and August days, though it can get warmer. You'll want a jacket for evenings, when temperatures drop to the low to mid 50s F/10-12 C. September highs only reach the low 60s F/15-17 C, so be prepared. Take along rain gear any time of year."
