The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1841. It has been serving the community for 170 years!

The Fire Department, located on Bannerman Street, is operated by a 40 member volunteer fire brigade responding to calls initiated by an electronic paging system. Additional fire fighting support is available on request from near by towns of Harbour Grace and Victoria.

The Fire Chief is Ed Kavanagh, the 1st Assistant Chief is Steven Burden , and the 2nd Assistant Chief is Keith C. Thomas.

Halloween Trick or Treat
Kids at Halloween

In addition to fighting fires, the Volunteer Fire Department carries out important community activities. Two of their activities are organizing the Carbonear Santa Claus Parade at Christmas time; and assisting children "Trick or Treating" at Halloween.
