Bulk Garbage will be collected on Monday, May 8. Residents must have items to the roadside by 8 am to guarantee collection. The contractor will be making ONE pass only through each street. Residents are encouraged to clean up debris around their properties that has accumulated throughout the winter and spring and other bulk items they may have for removal. Items for pick up can be placed near the street. Glass shall be boxed and “GLASS” written on items. Metals Collection
If you have metals for collection, please contact the Council Office and provide your name, civic address and items to be collected. Metal items are collected on the last Friday of the month starting May 26 by Council Staff.
Garbage Collection and Recycling
Eastern Waste Management picks up garbage and recycling for Carbonear. NOTE: Presently, garbage and recyclables are required to be placed at the side of the road by 8 am to guarantee collection. Commencing on Monday, October 3, 2016, garbage and recyclables will have to be placed at the side of the road no later than 7 pm to guarantee collection. Carbonear's water supply comes from Little Island Pond, about 5.6 kilometers west of the town and nearly 112 meters above sea level. The catchment area covers the river system of Island Pond Brook and includes Flings Big Pond, Carbonear Long Pond, Big Island Pond and others totaling, over 2830 hectares. This area is undeveloped except for summer cabins off Line Road from Little Flings Pond to Tuckers Gully. The water is chlorinated at the intake and carried to Carbonear along Line Road.
The town's sewer system covers all areas serviced by the water system. The sewers are generally of 8 inch diameter with 10 inch diameter near the outfall extremities. A 12 inch diameter section extends from LeMarchant Street to the Crocker's Cove outfall.
The Fire Department, located on Bannerman Street, is operated by a 40 member volunteer fire brigade responding to calls initiated by an electronic paging system. Additional fire fighting support is available on request from Harbour Grace and Victoria.
Open Fires– Permit Required
Residents must apply to the Town Office to obtain a permit for all open fires. From May to September, burning permits must be obtained from Forestry Resources as well. Further information is available by calling 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
Police protection is provided by the RCMP detachment headquartered in Harbour Grace, which is just 5 km away.
