In its 68 years as an incorporated town, Carbonear has never been busier, and has never looked better than it does in the Fall of 2016.
Our museums and historic sites attracted record numbers of visitors from within and outside the province this season, making 2016 a banner year for tourism. Sheila NaGeira Theatre continues to draw full houses to enjoy the variety of live entertainment offered.
Young athletes, their parents, relatives and friends arrived here in droves, this summer, to compete in the many provincial, regional and local tournaments and meets at the Carbonear Recreation Complex, giving new meaning to the term, "sports' tourism."
But these are only some of the attractions which draw people to our growing town. They also come here for studies at one of our post-secondary educational facilities, or to visit relatives at our medical and long term care facilities.
The wide variety of stores and services in our mall and in the Columbus/Powell Drive commercial district continue to make Carbonear the shopping and service centre for Conception and Trinity Bays. While this area of town continues to grow and prosper, with new expansion on the horizon, Council is also encouraged by the resurgence which has taken root in our older downtown core. We welcome the new entrepreneurs who are changing the vacant signs along Water Street to OPEN FOR BUSINESS.
Council is currently working with our consultant on a major study into the feasibility of revitalization of our downtown core. From what we have seen on the old street over the past year or two, revitalization is already underway.
Another study into the feasibility of developing a new hotel in town also bodes well for the future of Carbonear.
As we wind down what has been, arguably, our busiest year, we look forward to the new year ahead as a year for official openings and new beginnings. 2017 will see the official opening of: new Long Term Care Facility, Mayor Claude Garland Memorial Playground and Dog Park, new walking trail, new Town Depot, and many more housing developments, 50+ seniors' complexes and other enterprises.
The Mayor, Council and staff wish to extend Season's Greetings to all our citizens and wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year!
Mayor George Butt Jr. & Council
