The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1841. It has been serving the community for more than 170 years!
The Fire Department, located on Bannerman Street, is operated by a 40 member volunteer fire brigade responding to calls initiated by an electronic paging system. Additional fire fighting support is available on request from near by towns of Harbour Grace and Victoria.

In addition to fighting fires, the Volunteer Fire Department carries out important community activities. Two of their activities are organizing the Carbonear Santa Claus Parade at Christmas time; and assisting children "Trick or Treating" at Halloween
Pursuant to written Agreements entered into under S. 184 of the Municipalities Act, 1999, the Town of Carbonear provides fire protection services to the following areas outside the municipal boundary of the Town of Carbonear:
1.Local Service District of Freshwater
2. English Hill/Extension/Gadden’s Mash
3. Gunners Pond Residential Seasonal Area
The Town of Carbonear hereby provides further notice that fire protection services are not provided and the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department will not respond to calls for fire protection services to any area outside its municipal boundary for which appropriate written Agreement for such service has not been entered into pursuant to S. 184 of the Act.
